Francis Alÿs

On March 20, 2011, Francis Alÿs drove his VW Beetle from Mexico City to Culiacán, capital of Sinaloa state in northwestern Mexico. Upon arrival he crashed his car into a tree in the botanical garden, left it there and let nature do the rest.

Francis Alÿs (b. 1959 in Antwerp, Belgium, lives and works in Mexico City) multifaceted projects include public actions, installations, videos, paintings, and drawings. In additional to multiple solo and group exhibition in central venues worldwide, his work was the subject of a major survey, A Story of Deception, which was on view at Tate Modern in London, Wiels Centre d’Art Contemporain in Brussels, and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and MoMA PS1 in New York. In 2017, he unveiled a new work at the Iraqi Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale, resulting from his trips to the country. In 2022, Alÿs will represent Belgium at the 59th Venice Biennale.
